ODE TO SUNRISE Start with a star
rising on the green ridge
of a hill fed by enough winter rain
to milk an ocean.
Pour in the sun, full and yellow,
a sun that heats trees
and hearts of the coldest most hollow souls
until they become the most ardent lovers.
Add scents of cow and sheep,
spearmint, wild rose,
the songs of sparrows and crows of roosters,
their bodies so full of new energy
they burst and tell the surrounding hills
all about it.
Tell me, what gives rise
to poem, song, story and a good kiss
more than this torrid love affair
between the penetrating sun
and yielding hills?
