Spirit Daughter
Bearded one sits in breast
of mother bear cabin,
quill in hand,
gazing from candlelit window.
Stanzas of hickory-smoked verse
make love to evergreen forest
from the chimney.

Outside, a solitary doe
stands above scalloped stream,
searching for her opening.
Head lifts, she peers inside
flame-licked window:

Doe becomes wisp of spring girl
running in buttercup pastures
of her snow-filled stream spirit.
The light is her wind.
