<back to Poetry & Essays main page My mother, Helen Aline Welborn, grew up in Stewartsville, Indiana about 30 miles northwest of Evansville. As a young lady, she accompanied her father, a family physician and Civil War veteran, on his rounds throughout Posey County. She drove the horse and carriage, thereby arousing her interest in nature and her love for horses. The trips were also educational and reverent. She grew to love and respect all living things Ñ flowers, birds, trees, brooks. She was also able to have animals of her own, including horses, cats and dogs. My mother came from a creative family that took pride in service to others. Her brother, James, became one of the most prominent physicians in Southern Indiana's history; the Welborn Baptist Hospital in Evansville, Indiana was named for him. It celebrated its 100th anniversary in 1994. Her sister, Anne Acton Welborn, became a fine writer of children's books and historical papers. When Mother was transplanted to New England by marriage, her love for the nature in Southern Indiana was sharpened; thus, her poems reflected all of that love and appreciation. She also spent a considerable amount of time in Florida, particularly in the later years of her life. Still, she
sorely missed her immediate family in Indiana. For that reason,
many of the poems in Thirty Thoughts are nostalgic. This book was
originally published in 1938 by New Globe Publishing in Boston. SAMPLE
